Team USA Collects Eight Medals at World Mountain and Trail Running Championships
 
CANFRANC, SPAIN – Team USA will return from the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships with eight combined team and individual medals. Across a weekend featuring eight categories of races, Team USA swept the individual victories in the 82K long trail race and captured team silver medals for both the men’s and women’s teams. The women’s team also scored a silver medal in the classic 14K race while the men’s team won bronze in the uphill 6K race.
 
The success of Team USA resulted in a bronze medal in the Overall Federation Team standings behind only France and Italy, respectively.
 
At Saturday’s long trail race which transversed 82 kilometers through the heart of the Pyrenees on the French-Spanish border, Kate Schide was dominant. The 33-year-old Maine-native led from the beginning, eventually winning by more than 25 minutes in 9:57:59. For Schide, it continues a string of high-profile victories that includes this year’s Hardrock Hundred Mile Endurance Run in Colorado and last year’s UTMB, Western States and Canyons Endurance Run.
 
“I went out fast so that when we hit technical sections, I already had a solid gap which allowed me to race more defensively on the descents,” said Schide in a statement to the World Mountain Running Association. “Running on technical terrain like Canfranc felt very natural to me because of where I grew up in the U.S. and my years living in neighboring France.”
 
The other three women on the second place team were Shea Aquilano (14th), Allison Baca  (23rd), and Emily Schmitz (33rd)
 
While the final gap was not as dramatic, Jim Walmsley, winner of the short trail race here in 2019,  also turned in a dominant performance in the men’s race. He led the entire race and his grip on victory was all but sealed by the 60km mark. The four-time Western States champion was able to add more separation to a pair of French runners on the race’s final descent, winning in 8:35:11.
 
The rest of the silver-medal winning team was Adam Peterman (8th), Zach Miller (18th) and Tyler Green (31st)
 
“It was a much faster day than I had planned for,” said Walmsley in a statement to the World Mountain Running Association. “I actually planned to push in the second half, but I felt great from the start and managed to keep it up all the way to the finish.”
 
In the Mountain Classic 14K, the fifth place finish of Lauren Gregory led the team to a podium finish. Gregory’s teammates Anna Gibson and Courtney Coppinger were not far behind in 13th and 14th respectively while Nancy Scott finished in 23rd.
 
Featuring nearly 3,300 feet of vertical gain over six kilometers, the men’s team had a strong day. Their bronze-medal performance was highlighted by the fourth place finish of Christian Allen. Cam Smith took 11th. Tyler McCandless was 26th and Joseph Gray placed 34th .
In the women’s race, Anna Gibson grabbed the final spot on the podium to win the bronze medal, finishing in 46:07, just 34 seconds behind the winner and eight seconds back from second place.
