INDIANAPOLIS -- Bettering the men's world indoor record* for the 5000 meters, Grant Fisher (Park City, UT/USATF Utah) earned recognition as the sixth USATF Athlete of the Week award winner for 2025.
Fisher, the Olympic bronze medalist in the 5000 and 10,000 at Paris last summer, rode the noise of a raucous crowd at the Boston University Hemery Valentine Invitational to clock 12:44.09 and trim more than five seconds off the ratified world indoor record of 12:49.60 that was set in 2004 by Ethiopia's Kenenisa Bekele.
Going through the first 1000 in a rapid 2:31.45, Fisher kept pushing the pace through 2K in 5:06.13 and made it to 3K in 7:39.16. He hit the 4K mark in 10:12.97 and then finished with a 59.36 final 400 to seal the record and become the first American man to hold the world indoor record at the 5000-meter distance since World Athletics started ratifying indoor records in 1987. On Feb. 8 at the Millrose Games in New York City, Fisher bettered the world indoor record in the 3000 with a 7:22.91 effort.
