For Tuesdays with Toyota, we are spotlighting some of USATF's most dedicated members with a short feature on USATF.org and our social media channels. Here is our feature with USATF athlete Jonel Accad, a member of the USATF Potomac Valley Association from Bowie, Maryland. Why are you a member of USATF? One of the key reasons I chose to become a member of USATF is the organization's commitment to fostering the growth and development of track and field athletes at all levels. USATF provides a platform that caters to athletes of various ages and skill levels, from grassroots programs nurturing young talents to elite competitions showcasing world-class athleticism. This inclusivity aligns perfectly with my belief that sports should be accessible to everyone, and USATF's dedication to supporting athletes on their unique journeys resonates deeply with me. What is your "why"? My membership with USA Track & Field is a testament to my dedication to the sport, my appreciation for the track and field community, and my alignment with the organization's values. USATF has not only been a platform for my athletic pursuits but also a source of inspiration, growth, and camaraderie. As I continue my journey with USATF, I am excited about the opportunities for personal and collective success that lie ahead, and I am grateful to be part of a community that shares my passion for track and field. What is something that helps you focus while you train? Setting realistic goals. Understanding that my body has unique needs and limitations at 50, I approach track and field training with a focus on setting realistic and achievable goals. These goals may include improving overall fitness, increasing flexibility, enhancing cardiovascular health, and possibly even participating in age-appropriate competitions. By setting specific, measurable, and attainable objectives, I create a roadmap for progress while avoiding unnecessary strain. How has USATF impacted you? USA Track & Field has profoundly impacted my life in multifaceted ways. On a personal level, engaging in track and field has not only improved my physical health but has also become a source of mental and emotional well-being. The discipline and commitment cultivated through training have spilled over into my lifestyle, promoting positive habits. Professionally, the sport has taught me valuable skills such as goal setting, teamwork, and stress management, contributing to my overall effectiveness in the workplace. Moreover, USA Track & Field has played a pivotal role in shaping my hopes and dreams. Achieving success in competitions has fueled my athletic aspirations, while the values and life skills gained continue to inspire me to pursue my dreams beyond the track. In essence, USA Track & Field has been a transformative force, positively influencing my personal, professional, and aspirational journey. Outside USATF how do you spend your time? Beyond track and field, I believe in maintaining a well-rounded and fulfilling life by engaging in various activities. Embracing the outdoors, I often spend my time hiking scenic trails, which not only keeps me physically active but also allows me to connect with nature. Additionally, I enjoy exploring local parks, finding solace in the beauty of green spaces. To nurture my creative side, I often delve into reading, painting, or attending cultural events. Socializing with friends and family is equally important, whether it's sharing a meal, attending social gatherings, or simply enjoying quality time together. Balancing my passion for track and field with diverse interests outside the sport not only enriches my life but also contributes to a well-rounded sense of fulfillment and happiness. What is your favorite USATF memory? The memories of my javelin throw events are etched into the core of my athletic journey, each throw representing a unique chapter of determination and accomplishment. I vividly recall the palpable excitement as I approached the runway, the feel of the javelin in my hand, and the adrenaline surge as I released it into the air. The sound of the javelin cutting through the wind followed by the collective gasps and cheers from spectators created an electrifying atmosphere. Whether it was the satisfaction of achieving a personal best or the resilience displayed in overcoming challenges, each event brought a distinct sense of pride and fulfillment. The camaraderie among fellow athletes, the meticulous technique honed through hours of practice, and the thrill of competition collectively form a tapestry of memories that define my journey in javelin throwing. These memories serve as a testament to the dedication, passion, and joy that the sport has brought into my life, creating a mosaic of experiences that I cherish with great fondness. Is there an athlete or person who inspired you to join the sport? Jan Zelezny stands as the embodiment of inspiration in my journey as a javelin thrower. His unparalleled achievements and mastery of the sport have fueled my passion and commitment to excel in javelin throwing. Zelezny's incredible career, marked by three Olympic gold medals and numerous world records, showcases not only his immense talent but also his relentless work ethic and dedication to perfection. Observing his precision in technique and the sheer power behind his throws motivates me to refine my own skills. Beyond the accolades, Zelezny's sportsmanship and humility serve as a guiding light, reminding me that true greatness is not only measured in victories but also in the character displayed on and off the field. Jan Zelezny remains a source of inspiration, driving me to push my boundaries and strive for excellence in the challenging and exhilarating world of javelin throwing.
