INDIANAPOLIS — USA Track & Field today announced a roster of 39 women and 40 men for the World Athletics U20 Championships, scheduled for August 27-31 at the Estadio Atlético de la Videna in Lima, Peru. The meet features more than 1500 of the top track and field athletes aged 19 and under from more than 130 nations, and has been a stepping stone to Olympic and World Championships glory for many previous competitors. Athletes competing in the 2024 World U20 Championships must have been born between 2005 and 2009. Team USATF captured 15 medals at the 2022 edition of the Championships, including seven golds, the most by any country. The U.S. also finished atop the team point standings with 166, 39 ahead of runners-up Jamaica. This year's team includes five athletes who are the top entrants in their events: Ja'Kobe Tharp (men's 110 hurdles - 13.12), Scottie Vines (men's high jump - 2.24/7-4.25), Molly Haywood (women's pole vault - 4.46/14-7.5), Sophia Beckmon (women's long jump - 6.86/22-6.25), and Akaoma Odeluga (women's shot put - 18.13/59-5.75). Tharp was the NCAA runner-up for Auburn, twice setting an American U20 record for the 42-inch barriers with 13.18 clockings, and his 13.12 to win the USATF U20 gold put him at No. 2 on the all-time U.S. U20 performer list. Beckmon tied the American U20 record with her 6.86 at the Fighting Illini Tune-Up on May 4, while Odeluga's shot put mark in the Olympic Trials qualifying round moved her to No. 2 on the all-time U.S. U20 performer list.
