NEW YORK CITY — World leaders and collegiate records in the women's mile and 1,500m highlighted the Dr. Sander Invitational Saturday at the Nike Armory, the second U.S. stop on the World Athletics Indoor Tour. The women's mile lived up to its pre-meet hype with a three-way battle that ended up producing three of the top 10 all-time U.S. indoor performances and a collegiate record. Alicia Monson went to the front by the 600m mark after following the pacemaker through the first two laps. Monson held a small lead over Whittni Morgan and North Carolina State's Katelyn Tuohy over the final half mile and crossed the line in a world-leading 4:23.55 to move to No. 8 on the all-time U.S. indoor performer list. Morgan staved off Tuohy to take second in 4:23.97 to claim No. 9 on that all-time American performer list, with Tuohy shattering the collegiate record in third at 4:24.26. Tuohy's time chopped more than a second off the previous collegiate record of 4:25.91, set by Jenny Simpson in 2009, and gave her the No. 10 slot on the all-time U.S. indoor performer list. En route, Tuohy smashed the collegiate record for 1,500m with a 4:06.49 behind Monson's world-leading 4:06.38. Sage Hurta-Klecker followed a very quick opening pace and had a sizable lead over Ajee' Wilson through 600m in 1:32.66. Wilson started to move up on Hurta-Klecker headed into the bell lap, and then went past her off the final turn to win in a world-leading 2:35.97, .4 in front of Hurta-Klecker. Wilson's time was the No. 8 mark on the all-time U.S. indoor performance list and Hurta-Klecker's 2:36.37 put her at No. 9. Rhode Island high schooler Sophia Gorriaran narrowly missed the national prep record with a 2:39.83 in fourth, putting her second on the all-time high school performer list. 2018 USATF Indoor Championships two mile winner Drew Hunter sprinted away from Eric Holt to win the men's mile in 3:55.57, and Madie Boreman captured the women's 3,000m title in 8:50.89. Other winners on the track included North Carolina high schooler Shawnti Jackson, who was just outside her week-old national prep record in the 300m at 36.73, and Kahmari Montgomery, who took the men's 300m in 33.17. Long jump victories went to Rhesa Foster, who spanned 6.60m/21-8 to take women's gold, and Will Williams, who won the men's competition at 8.06m/26-5.5. World Championships fifth-place finisher Shelby McEwen cleared 2.20m/7-2.5 to win the men's high jump, and Zarriea Willis was the women's winner with a 1.80m/5-10.75 effort.
