For Tuesdays with Toyota, we are spotlighting some of USATF's most dedicated members with a short feature on USATF.org and our social media channels. Here is our feature with USATF athlete Megan Eckert, a proud member of the USATF New Mexico Association out of Santa Fe, NM. Why are you a member of USATF? I’ve always enjoyed competition with myself and others, but I didn’t pick up running until my 30’s. Through USATF, I have competition, community, and support in running even though I’m missing the young athlete experience. Participation in USATF has been a highlight of my adult ultra running experience. What is your "why"? I’m motivated to see just how far I can run and how steep I can ascend. I’m constantly trying to find beautiful places by foot that a small percentage of people are able to reach. It’s about testing, pushing, and breaking personal “limits” to see what awaits around the next corner. What is something that helps you focus while you train? Smile for miles and go after that goal. How has USATF impacted you? USATF has given me the opportunity to compete in the 100-mile trail championships and the 100-mile road championships. I’ve had the chance to challenge myself and be motivated by what others are doing in the sport. People in track and field are truly amazing athletes. Outside USATF, how do you spend your time? I’m a middle school special education teacher and cross-country coach. I enjoy trying new things which have led to new hobbies including travel, backpacking, skiing, snowboarding and any other outdoor activity. This year, I hope to add surfing to my list. What is your favorite USATF memory? My first USATF championship race, Brazos Bend 100, in 2021 was one of my favorite memories. Though I moved from Houston years ago, it was like coming home to a huge family. To have the success I did at that race (Second place female), with so many old and new friends made it a very treasured memory. Is there an athlete or person who inspired you to join the sport? My boyfriend, now husband, wanted to run trails. I wasn’t all for it but told him I would go to a meet up for support. I ran with the group and now I can’t imagine spending my free time doing anything.
