MAYAGĂEZ, Puerto Rico — Team USATF dominated the medal table at the Pan American U20 Championships at Jose A. Figueroa Freire Stadium, capturing 30 golds and 62 total medals. It was the highest medal count in 21 editions of the Championships, dating back to 1980. The previous high of 61, also by the U.S., came in 1999. Shawnti Jackson anchored the women's 4x100 to an American U20 record of 42.88, chopping .4 seconds off the previous record that was set last year at the World U20 Championships in Colombia. She added individual gold in the 200 with a 22.35 that moved her to No. 3 on the all-time U.S U20 performer list and high school performer list. A pair of wins by Ellie Shea highlighted American efforts in the distance events. Shea won the 1500 in 4:16.61 and came back to take the 3000 by more than 45 seconds in 9:05.78, the No. 8 all-time U.S. high school performance. Christine Mallard also mounted the top of the podium twice, earning the win in the women's 400 with a 51.88 clocking before anchoring the 4x400. Double relay golds went to George Garcia and Madison Whyte, who teamed up to pace the U.S. mixed 4x400 to an easy victory in 3:18.07, the third fastest U20 time ever. Whyte had the fastest split on the women's 4x400 that won by more than eight seconds in 3:30.25, while Garcia ran the opening leg on the men's 4x400 that won by more than three seconds in 3:05.98. Other top performances included a 16.70/54-9.5 in the women's shot put by Mensi Stiff, moving her to No. 4 on the all-time high school performer list.
