NEW YORK CITY — Elite indoor track and field returns to the Big Apple Saturday as the New York City Armory hosts the Dr. Sander Invitational, with 12 invitational events on the oval and on the infield. The Dr. Sander Invitational, a bronze level meet on the World Athletics Indoor Tour, has produced a slew of world-leading marks in the past, and this year's meet should continue that tradition. Highlighting the action on the track will be a showdown between Ajee' Wilson and Sage Hurta-Klecker in the women's 1,000m, with talk of an American record attempt. Jen Toomey set the AR of 2:34.19 in 2004 in Birmingham, England. Wilson is a highly decorated 800m runner who sits in the No. 2 position on the all-time U.S. performer list for the indoor 1,000m with a best of 2:34.71 that was set in winning the 2019 USATF Indoor title. Wilson holds the American indoor record in the 800m at 1:58.29 and was the World Indoor gold medalist last March. Hurta-Klecker had a superb 2022 campaign that saw her lower her 800m PR to 1:57.85 and finish third in the Diamond League final. The Colorado graduate won the NCAA indoor mile title in 2021 in 4:30.58. Rhode Island high schooler Sophia Gorriaran set a world U18 indoor best in the 800m last season with her 2:00.58, and Charlene Lipsey set an indoor best of 2:37.97 to win the USATF 1,000m gold in 2017. World Championships veterans Alicia Monson and Courtney Wayment will be tested by NCAA cross country champion Katelyn Tuohy of North Carolina State in the women's mile. Monson, who ran a world-leading 8:31.62 in the 3,000m at last year's meet, was second in the USATF 10,000m championships in 2022 and this will be only her fourth lifetime indoor mile. She is scheduled to double back in the 3,000m. The NCAA 3,000m steeplechase champion for BYU last year, Wayment was 12th at the World Championships after a runner-up finish at the USATF Championships and has a 4:30.47 mile PR. After winning the ACC outdoor 1,500m title last year, Tuohy went on to claim the NCAA 5,000m crown and then won the NCAA individual cross country gold. She has a 1,500m best of 4:06.84. Others who will challenge for the win include Josette Andrews (neĆ© Norris), who was runner-up in this race last year and set an indoor PR of 4:20.81. She also placed fifth in the 1,500m at the World Indoor Championships. NACAC 1,500m bronze medalist Helen Schlachtenhaufen brings an indoor PR of 4:28.81. Shane Streich, the American record holder in the men's 1,000m will move up in distance to contest the mile, going up against 2019 USATF Indoor Championships two mile champion Drew Hunter and NACAC 1,500m winner Eric Holt. Hunter has an indoor mile best of 3:56.80, with Streich setting his indoor mile PR of 3:57.98 at this meet last year. Holt has run 3:54.09 outdoors and 3:57.16 indoors. In the men's 3,000m, 2016 World Indoor Championships silver medalist Ryan Hill and Willy Fink, who was eighth at the USATF Indoor Championships last year, are the top entrants. On the infield, the men's high jump will feature USATF outdoor champion Shelby McEwen, who placed fifth at the World Championships in Eugene and was also an Olympic finalist in 2021. He will go up against Darryl Sullivan, the USATF Indoors silver medalist and World Indoor Championships 10th-place finisher last year. World Championships fourth-place finisher Quanesha Burks tops a strong women's long jump field and was fifth at the World Indoors last year following her gold medal performance at the USATF Indoor Championships. Tiffany Flynn and Sha'Keela Saunders, the two women who finished behind her at the USATF Indoor Championships, are also in the field, as is Monae Nichols, who was fourth at the USATF Championships outdoors and took silver at the 2022 NCAA Indoor Championships for Texas Tech. Multi-talented JuVaughn Harrison, an Olympic finalist in the men's high jump and long jump in Tokyo, has his hands full in the long jump with USATF Outdoor Championships gold medalist Rayvon Grey and World Indoor Championships bronze medalist Marquis Dendy. Dendy won the 2016 World Indoor title and also placed sixth at last year's World Championships in Eugene. NACAC gold medalist Will Williams was fourth at the USATF Outdoor Championships in 2022 and qualified for the outdoor World Championships. A pair of 300m races have North Carolina prep star Shawnti Jackson, the 2022 World U20 women's 100m bronze medalist who is fresh off breaking the national high school indoor 300m record that was previously held by Sydney McLaughlin, and 2019 Pan American Games 400m hurdles silver medalist Amere Lattin. Lattin will race against former University of Houston teammate Kahmari Montgomery, the 10th-fastest indoor 300m performer in U.S. history at 32.42 and the 2018 USATF outdoor champion at 400m.
