LEXINGTON, KY — Day three of 2022 USATF Masters Outdoor Championships has concluded with one American age group record at the UK Track & Field Complex while 61 gold medalists were crowned with one day left of competition. The first record of the day came from three-time Olympian Ed Burke in the men’s 80-84 hammer throw, breaking the age group American record of 43.11m/141-5 with a 43.33m/142-2 mark. He also won the weight throw with a mark of 16.21/53-2. “I’m a masters advocate. It’s amazing to be in a competition like this. Your heart jumps as you get ready to compete. It’s like the Olympics,” said Burke. Burke is recovering from long haul COVID-19 infection and finally feels like he is recovering and gaining back his strength. He will compete one more time in the men’s 80-84 discus at 1:15 p.m. ET. Kay Glynn was inches away from breaking the women’s 65-69 triple jump American age group record with a win and a mark of 8.41m/27-7.25. The American age group record is 8.53m/28-0. On Friday, Glynn defended her 80m hurdles title (16.60, +1.3). 1996 Olympian Michelle Rohl ran a blazing 2:23.24 in the women’s 55-59 800m to defend her title in that event. Rohl came only about a second away from her own American age group record and is the reigning 800m World Masters Athletics (WMA) Championships silver medalist. On Thursday, Rohl won the women’s 55-59 5,000m (18:33.83), which she also won in 2021 and at the WMA Championships in Finland this year. Rohl will attempt to defend her title in the 1,500m on Sunday at 8:35 a.m. after winning silver in the event at WMAs. April Lund of GYS Track Club won the 40-44 women’s 10,000-meters with a time of 35:19.33 after winning the 5,000m on the first day of the meet. She is the reigning champion of the 35-39 10,000m from the 2021 USATF Masters Championships and competed in Finland, coming out with a half marathon gold and 5,000m bronze. Another impressive performance in the 10,000m was Lisa Veneziano’s 38:05.23 run in the 55-59 age group to defend her 2021 title in the same event and age group. Florence Meiler came just an inch short of the American record (0.93m/3-0.5) in the 85-89 high jump with a height of 0.90m/2-11.5 for gold. At last year’s USATF Masters Championships, Meiler earned silver in the same event, along with five gold medals in other events. Gloria Krug of Philadelphia Masters continued her success in the throws after winning Thursday’s 90-94 weight throw and Friday’s discus (11.07m/36-4) with a win in javelin for her age group (10.01m/32-10). Krug is coming off an astounding eight medal wins, six of them being gold at WMA Championships. Daniel Tutskey of Southwest Sprinters Track Club ran a quick 10.91 in the men’s 40-44 100m dash final. Reigning men’s 60-64 100m world champion Allan Tissenbaum built off his excellent run in the 100m prelims on Friday with a win in 12.08 seconds during finals. At the WMA Championships, he also won silver in the 200m. Venezuelan runner Willfredo Borotoche finished first in the men’s 35-39 800m with a time of 2:00.32 as a runner from one of the 13 countries with athletes in attendance. Foreign athletes may not displace U.S. medalists but are given duplicate awards.
