INDIANAPOLIS — Beating a power-packed women's field at Wisconsin's Nuttycombe Invitational cross country meet, Katelyn Tuohy (Stony Point, New York/USATF New York) earned recognition as the 35th USATF Athlete of the Week award winner for 2022. Tuohy, a junior at North Carolina State who won this year's NCAA outdoor 5,000m title on the track and earned silver indoors in the 3,000m and 5,000m, outsprinted teammate Kelsey Chmiel to win the 6km race by five seconds in 19:44.3 on the Zimmer Cross Country Course in Madison, leading the Wolfpack to the team title. Three of the NCAA's top four ranked women's teams and 24 of the national top 30 competed at the prestigious meet. Nestling in fifth in a large pack that passed the 2km mark in 6:46, Tuohy moved into second over the next 2km, going through 4km in 13:34.7 and running side-by-side with BYU's Aubrey Frentheway on the undulating course. A 6:09.7 split over the final 2km segment put her well clear of any challengers as she improved on her fifth-place finish as a freshman last fall. Other top performances from last week:
Florida's Parker Valby won the Arturo Barrios Invitational women's race at Texas A&M by more than a minute, covering the 6km course in 18:58.2.
Duncan Hamilton won the men's 8km race at Oklahoma State's Weis-Crockett Invitational in 23:28.8 to lead Montana State to the team title.
