CHICAGO — Emily Sisson bettered the women's American record Sunday at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, chopping 43 seconds off the pending AR with a 2:18:29 that earned her the runner-up spot on the podium. Keira D'Amato set the pending AR of 2:19:12 at Houston in January. Sisson, who was 10th at the Tokyo Olympic Games in the 10,000m and had top-10 finishes in that event at the 2017 and 2019 World Championships, also cut almost five minutes off her previous marathon PB, set at London in 2019 when she placed sixth in 2:23:08. In May she bettered the AR in the half marathon with a 67:11 at Indianapolis. Seventh through the 10km mark in 32:54, Sisson was in a group of six women who were following in the wake of the world record pace set by Kenya's Ruth Chepngetich. That pack held steady through the halfway point in 69:26 before dropping to three challengers at 30km in 1:38:37. Still four minutes adrift of Chepngetich, Sisson started to ease away from the other challengers over the next 5km and was more than a minute up on the third-placer at 40km. A quick finish put Sisson across the line 4:11 behind Chepngetich and 2:23 ahead of third place finisher Vivian Kiplagat of Kenya. Chepngetich stopped the clock at 2:14:18, just 14 seconds off the world record that was set in 2019 at Chicago by Brigid Kosgei. Five American women finished in the top 10, all with personal bests, as Susanna Sullivan demolished her previous PB by more than eight minutes with a 2:25:14 in sixth, and Sara Vaughn was seventh in 2:26:23. Maggie Montoya took eighth in 2:28:07, and Makena Morley was 10th in 2:30:28 in her marathon debut. Conner Mantz had a stellar debut with a 2:08:16 to take seventh in the men's race, moving to No. 7 on the all-time U.S. performer list and missing the fastest debut ever by an American by only 20 seconds. Three other U.S. men dipped under 2:10, led by Zach Panning, who was 11th in 2:09:28. Matt McDonald was 12th in 2:09:49, and Nicolas Montañez was 13th in 2:09:55. *Pending verification by the USATF records committee.
