Seven advance to finals, semi-finals in World Athletics Indoor Championships day two morning session

BELGRADE, Serbia — Seven of eight Team USATF athletes advanced to the next round of their events in the morning session of day two at the World Athletics Indoor Championships at Stark Arena.

Men’s 60m

2014 World silver medalist Marvin Bracy (Jacksonville, Florida/USATF Florida) clocked a personal best 6.46 to win heat four of the men’s 60m with the fastest qualifying time of the morning. Indoor 60m world record holder, reigning champion, and current world leader Christian Coleman (Lexington, Kentucky/USATF Kentucky) ran a comfortable 6.51, winning his first heat to easily advance to the semi-final. 

Women’s HJ 

Rachel McCoy (Austin, Texas/USATF Southern) cleared 1.84/6-0.5 on her third attempt of the day before three misses at 1.88m/6-2 to finish twelfth in the women’s high jump. 

Women’s 60m Hurdles

Gabbi Cunningham (Holly Springs, North Carolina/USATF North Carolina) ran 7.93 to win heat three of the women’s 60m hurdles to automatically qualify for the afternoon session’s semi-final. Alaysha Johnson (Fort Lauderdale, Florida/USATF Florida) ran 8.03 and won the next heat to advance. 

Women’s 800m

Ajee Wilson (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania/USATF Mid-Atlantic) came through the 400m in second place in heat two and then moved to the front by 600m and went on to win in 2:03.42 to advance to Sunday’s final. Olivia Baker (Atlanta, Georgia/USATF Georgia) finished sixth in the first heat in 2:02.35 and did not advance to the final.

Men’s 1500m

The men’s 1500m duo, Joshua Thompson (Hillsboro, Oregon/USATF Oregon) and Samuel Prakel (Seattle, Washington/USATF Pacific Northwest), both advanced to Sunday afternoon’s final. Thompson ran 3:38.61, crossing the line third in the first heat to earn a time qualifier. Prakel finished fourth in heat three, running a season’s best of 3:38.69 for the final time qualifier. 

Heptathlon

Steven Bastien (Ann Arbor, Michigan/USATF Michigan). Moved up to sixth after an 8.14 in the 60m hurdles, but dropped back to eighth with a 4.70m/15-5 in the pole vault. He will enter the 1000m in the afternoon session with 5177 points. Garrett Scantling (Jacksonville, Florida/USATF Florida) withdrew from the competition.
