Fisher’s Boston win earns him USATF Athlete of the Week honors

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana — Running the fastest indoor 5000m time ever by an American, Grant Fisher (Portland, Oregon) earned recognition as the sixth USATF Athlete of the Week award winner for 2022.

Fisher, who was fifth in the 10000m and ninth in the 5000m at the Tokyo Olympic Games last summer, won the Hemery Valentine Invitational men’s 5000m at Boston University with a 12:53.73, more than seven seconds faster than the existing American indoor record.

His time moved him to No. 5 on the all-time world indoor performer list and just missed the American outdoor record of 12:53.60. Fisher cut almost nine seconds off his own previous personal best. The top three finishers in the race bettered their national records, and Emmanuel Bor in fourth was also faster than the existing American indoor record.

Other top performances from last week:

  • Elise Cranny bettered the American indoor record in the women's 5000m at the Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston with a 14:33.17, chopping more than 14 seconds off the existing record.
  • Shane Streich bettered the American indoor record in the men's 1000m at the Louisville ATL meet with a 2:16.16 clocking, moving him to No. 8 on the all-time world performer list.
  • Roisin Willis set a high school indoor record in the girls' 800m with a 2:00.06 at the Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston, taking 1.72 seconds off the previous best.
