Tuesdays with Toyota spotlights USATF's most dedicated members. Meet Ronald Pate, a USATF volunteer, Masters athlete, and a member of the USATF Hawaii Association from Honolulu, Hawaii. "I have been active with USATF from the beginning in 1964, when it was AAU and then it became TAC (The Athletics Congress) which later became USATF. I became the Sanction Administrator for the Hawaii Association in 1986 because I was putting on 25 events. I competed in track and field for over 20 years when I became interested in running long distance races in 1984, with the goal of becoming one of the best in the United States. In my first 10 km race, I finished 1225th out of 3900 runners and I was 280th in my age division. In 2012, I became the USATF age-group Champion in the 10 km, after winning the 2005 Masters National Championship in the 8 km, two days after winning my third USATF Championship in the 3000m Steeplechase. I have run on Team USATF as a Masters athlete in Italy, France, Spain, Finland, Hungary, Poland, Canada, Korea, and Costa Rica over the years and had the thrill of hearing the National Anthem from the top of the podium. I have been involved with youth athletes in the developmental programs in USATF for more than 30 years, which gave me the opportunity to work with some of the high school students I coached and mentored — hundreds of youth who became successful later in life, both in higher education and in their careers. I have attended most of the USATF annual meetings since 1990 and had the honor of meeting and working with many great people involved with USATF. Being that track and field, coaching, and long distance running has been a lifestyle for me, it seems proper that I have tried to give back some of what this sport has given to me. I am thankful for having the honor of meeting so many great people and gaining so many wonderful friends throughout the world through my involvement with USATF. Track and field was my first real love and still impacts my life in a positive way. There are so many memories of running races throughout the world as a member of Team USATF. However, the one thing that means the most is having my wife with me who has been by my side supporting my efforts over the years. I plan on being involved with USATF as long as I live."
