Mu’s 800m record earns her USATF Athlete of the Week honors
INDIANAPOLIS -- Texas A&M freshman
Athing Mu
(College Station, Texas) was selected as the 14th USATF Athlete of the Week award winner for 2021 after bettering the American U20 record in the women’s 800m. It is her second AOW honor this year.
Running in less-than-optimal conditions at the Michael Johnson Classic in Waco, Texas, Mu came through the 400m mark in around 60 seconds and then closed quickly over the final 150m to stop the clock at 1:57.73, bettering the previous U20 national record of 1:58.21, set in 2013 by Ajee’ Wilson in finishing fifth at the IAAF World Championships in Moscow.
Mu also broke her own collegiate absolute record, taking down the old mark of 1:58.40 that she ran indoors on Feb. 27 this year. Before Mu’s effort, Oregon’s Raevyn Rogers had the fastest outdoor collegiate time ever of 1:59.10, set in 2017. Mu is now No. 10 on the all-time U.S. performer list and No. 6 on the world all-time U20 performer list.
More top performances from the past week:
Sha’Carri Richardson ran an American-leading 22.11 to win the women’s 200m at the Tom Jones Memorial in Gainesville, Florida.
Grant Holloway ran a world-leading 13.07 in the men’s 110m hurdles at the Tom Jones Memorial in Gainesville, Florida.
JoVaughn Martin of Florida State equaled the world-leading mark in the men’s 100m with a 9.94 PR at the Tom Jones Memorial in Gainesville, Florida.
Janee’ Kassanavoid moved to No. 8 on the all-time U.S. women’s hammer performer list with her 74.38m/244-0 win at LSU’s Boots Garland Invitational.
Now in its 20th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week when there are high-level competitions and features the athlete on USATF.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
