In the fourth and final American Track League meet at the Randal Tyson Indoor Center, in Fayetteville, Arkansas, six-time Olympic gold medalist Allyson Felix opened her 2021 season and high school standout Jaylen Slade set a new high school indoor record. Allyson Felix came from behind to finish second in the 60m clocking 7.28 (7.275) behind Great Britain's Daryll Neita in 7.24. Marybeth Price placed third to Felix also in 7.28 (7.280). Less than an hour after the 60m, Felix took on teenage star Shawnti Jackson in the 200m and set a new indoor personal best of 22.59. It was the first time since 2003, when Felix was 17 years old, that she ran the indoor 200m. Jackson finished third in 23.45 behind Puerto Rico’s Jasmine Camacho-Quinn in 22.91 In the only high school race of the day, it was IMG Academy’s Jaylen Slade that stole the spotlight from the professionals. Slade set a new 200m American indoor high school record clocking 20.62 to break Noah Lyles’ record of 20.63 set in 2016. Slade’s time is the 10th fastest time in the world this year. Three indoor lifetime bests led to the statistically-best women’s shot put competition in U.S. memory, with Raven Saunders coming through in round four to hit 19.57m/64-2.5 for the win. That was a one centimeter PR for Saunders, and Maggie Ewen blasted an overall PR 19.54m/64-1.25 to take second. In third, Jessica Ramsey notched a big overall lifetime best of 19.50m/63-11.75. Those marks ranked Saunders, Ewen and Ramsey as the #4-6 all-time U.S. indoor performers. Despite battling food poisoning for two days leading up to Sunday’s competition, Ryan Crouser, the reigning Olympic champion and world indoor record-holder in the shot put, led all the way but it was his 21.93m/71-11.50 in the fifth round that secured the victory. Best known as a 400m hurdler, Shamier Little sparkled in a lifetime-best 50.57 flat 400m, moving to #7 on the all-time U.S. indoor performer list. Little zoomed past the 200m mark in 23.45 and was never challenged as she became the third-fastest woman in the world this season. Marquis Dendy took control of the long jump competition in the second round with a leap of 7.68m/25-2.50 which would have stood as the winner if it wasn’t for his huge on this final jump. On his sixth jump, Dendy soared to 8.19m/ 26-10.10, the fifth-best jump in the world this year. Will London held off Robert Grant of Italy and Vernon Norwood to win the 400m crossing the line in 46.36. Grant finished second in 46.75 and Norwood was third in 46.83.
