Indianapolis — In a joint announcement today (Wednesday), World Athletics, USATF and Oregon21, LLC confirmed new dates for the World Athletics Championships, originally scheduled to be held in Oregon, from August 6 -15, 2021. The new dates for the first-ever, global outdoor track and field championships to be held in the United States will be July 15-24, 2022. “USATF worked diligently with all the key stakeholders to find a suitable date for rescheduling,” said USATF CEO Max Siegel. “Postponing to 2022 will allow us even more time to prepare for the world’s best athletes to descend on Eugene, Oregon. We appreciate the alliance of all partners including World Athletics, the local organizing committee and the state of Oregon.” Oregon last played host to the IAAF World Indoor Championships in 2016 in Portland where 44 national indoor records and two championship records were set. Team USATF had their best indoor performance in history with 23 medals, a new record for any country at a single World Indoors, breaking 19 medals by the U.S. in 1999. American’s 13 gold medals broke the previous record of 10, achieved by the U.S. in 2012. The World Athletics Championships Oregon22 will be held at the new Hayward Field at the University of Oregon.
