As a part of the USATF Week of Thanks campaign, we are spotlighting some of USATF's most dedicated members with a short feature (Humans of New York-style) on USATF.org and our social media accounts. Here is our sixth feature with the father-daughter duo Josh Rorem and Katie Rorem-Godin, both of whom have spent their lives in the sport and are now certified officials from Huntington Beach, California and members of the Southern California Association. Katie: “I first joined USATF when I began competing in Track & Field as a sophomore in high school. I continued competing in pole vault through high school and college and for a few years afterwards. During my competitive years, my father became a USATF official. When I was done competing, I turned to officiating through USATF as a way to stay involved in the sport and connected with the many people I had met. Plus, officiating was a fun activity that my dad and I could do together. That was more than a decade ago. Over the years, my dad has mentored me and helped me grow into a knowledgeable and capable official. Even today, I regularly still see fellow competitors, coaches, and others I first met back in my competition days. Officiating with USATF has not only given me the opportunity to stay involved with the sport I love, but also a front-row seat to watch the sport grow. Along the way, my dad and I have had wonderful opportunities to officiate at National Championship meets together and we have developed some great friendships. Officiating through USATF is an awesome way to get involved in Track & Field at any age. You get an inside and close-up view of meets and get to know competitors and other officials. And it is easy to get started. I am most thankful for the wonderful memories that I have made with my father over our years officiating together with USATF. My favorite experience with USATF is the magic I felt as part of the officiating crew at my first Outdoor National Championships in Sacramento. Though I was on the crew for high jump and my dad was with the Pole Vault crew, we were able to work a bit with both events. I met many super-experienced officials, learned a ton, and made some lasting friendships. The competition was impressive and I really had a fantastic time.”
