Katelyn Tuohy (Thiells, New York) ran what is believed to be the fastest ever 5 km cross country time by a high school girl, clocking 16:06.9 to win the Ocean State Invitational in Rhode Island to earn USATF Athlete of the Week for the second time in 2018.
Tuohy, a junior at North Rockland (NY) High School, won by more than two minutes and would have placed second in the boys’ championship race. Her time beat the previous national best of 16:23.3, set in 2015 by Katie Rainsberger of Air Academy HS in Colorado Springs.
Other notable performances from the weekend:
Sabra Harvey — Harvey, 69, had the best age graded time of the day at the USATF Masters 5 km Cross Country Championships in Buffalo. The winner of five medals at the recent WMA World Championships in Spain, she ran 21:46 to grade out at 95.66, eight points ahead of her nearest competitor.
Gail Sterling — Sterling, 58, won four golds and a silver at the Gainesville Senior Games in Florida. He won the long jump, triple jump, discus and javelin, and was runner-up in the shot put.
Alan Evans — Evans won the 55-59 division at the USATF Masters 5 km Cross Country Championships in Buffalo and had the best age graded time overall. His 17:57 graded out at 85.44 and he won his division by 37 seconds.
Olivier Leblond — Leblond, 46, was the overall and men’s winner at the USATF 24-hour Championships in Cleveland, where he covered 160.497 miles.
Megan Alvarado — Alvarado was the top female finisher at the USATF 24-hour Championships, going 140.514 miles and finishing third overall.
