Jeannie Rice (Concord, Ohio) demolished the U.S. women’s 70-74 age group marathon record to earn USATF Athlete of the Week.
Rice, 70, ran 3:27:50 at the Chicago Marathon to knock almost 20 minutes off the existing age group record of 3:46:18, set in 2005 by Ginette Bedard. She also set records at 20K, half marathon, 25K and 30K en route, and bettered the listed world women’s 70-74 masters marathon record of 3:35:29.
Other notable performances from the weekend:
Sara Hall — Hall outlasted Molly Huddle to win the women’s USATF 10 Mile Championships in Minneapolis for the second year in a row, edging Huddle by one second in 52:47 for her second consecutive Circuit win.
Shadrack Kipchirchir — Kipchirchir pulled away over the final quarter-mile to win the men’s USATF 10 Mile Championships by three seconds in 46:32 for his first USATF Running Circuit victory of the season.
Zach Ornelas — Ornelas was dominant in winning the USATF 50 Mile Road Championship in Boalsburg, Pennsylvania, running 5:55:13 to top the rest of the field by more than 40 minutes.
Keely Henninger — Henninger was the top female finisher by more than 90 minutes at the USATF 50 Mile Road Championships, placing second overall in 6:37:14.
Galen Rupp — Rupp was the first American finisher at the Chicago Marathon, running 2:06:21 to take fifth with the sixth-fastest time in U.S history.
Tierney Wolfgram — Wolfgram, 15, finished sixth in the Twin Cities Marathon in 2:40:03 in her debut at the distance.
Rob Robertson — Robertson, 55, walked 100 miles in 23:23:46 at Auckland, New Zealand, earning his sixth centurion award, a feat achieved by only four other men in history.
