DeAnna Price (DeSoto, Illinois) upset world record-holder Anita Wlodarczyk in the women’s hammer at the IAAF Continental Cup to earn USATF Athlete of the Week for the second time in 2018.
Competing for the first time under innovative rules that featured a head-to-head battle with Wlodarczyk in the fifth and final round, Price unleashed her best throw of the day with a 75.46m/247-7 that topped the two-time defending Olympic and World champion’s effort by more than seven feet.
Other notable performances from the weekend:
Jenny Simpson — Simpson won her sixth straight, and seventh overall, 5th Avenue Mile in 4:18.9, overcoming rain and wet pavement to hold off a fast-closing Colleen Quigley.
Christian Taylor — Returning to the stadium where his international career started 11 years ago, Taylor dominated the triple jump at the Continental Cup in Ostrava, spanning 17.59m/57-8.5. He also ran the opening leg on the victorious mixed 4x400m relay.
Jenny Hitchings —Hitchings broke the Women's 55-59 American Record for the 10 Mile Run at the Buffalo Stampede 10 Mile Run in Sacramento, CA on Sunday, September 9th. Her 1:01:20 broke the existing record by over a minute as she finished 10th Overall, 2nd Woman and 1st Female Masters Runner.
Paul Chelimo — Chelimo out-dueled Canada’s Mo Ahmed to take top honors in the 3,000m at the Continental Cup, avoiding elimination on the way to a 7:57.13.
Sara Hall — Hall won the USATF women’s 20K championships at New Haven by 16 seconds in 1:09:04 in steamy conditions.
Leonard Korir — Korir was the men’s USATF 20K champion at New Haven with a 60:17 effort, winning his second title in three years by 12 seconds.
