Christian Coleman (Atlanta, Georgia) won the Diamond League final 100m at Brussels in a world-leading 9.79 to earn USATF Athlete of the Week for the third time in 2018.
He beat previous world leader Ronnie Baker by .14 seconds as he sprinted to his third Diamond League victory of the year and picked up $50,000 in prize money. Coleman’s time makes him equal third on the all-time U.S. performers list and equal seventh on the all-time world list.
Other notable performances from the weekend:
Noah Lyles — Lyles won the Diamond League 200m final in 19.67 at Zürich, making him only the second man in history (along with Usain Bolt) to record four sub-19.70 clockings in one year.
Dalilah Muhammad — Muhammad won the Diamond League 400H title in Zürich with a 53.88.
Paul Chelimo — Chelimo ran the fastest 5,000m by an American this year to take sixth at the Diamond League final in Brussels at 12:57.55. That time puts him at #4 on the all-time U.S. performers list.
Brianna McNeal — McNeal won the Diamond League 100H title at Brussels in 12.61, edging out world record holder Keni Harrison.
Colleen Quigley — Quigley cut five seconds off her PR in the 3,000m steeplechase at Berlin to win in 9:10.27, moving her to #3 on the all-time U.S. list.
Now in its 17th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on USATF.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
