Liam Anderson (Larkspur, California) won the boys’ title at the NXN Nike Cross Nationals to earn USATF Athlete of the Week.
Anderson, a senior at Redwood High School in Larkspur, set a record of 14:57.6 for the 5K course at Portland’s Glendoveer Golf Course, staving off challenges from Indiana’s Cole Hocker and Colorado’s Cole Sprout. He is the first runner to crack 15 minutes at NXN and finished more than three seconds ahead of Hocker and five seconds up on Sprout. The two-time California state champion also became the first boy from the Golden State to win an NXN Nike Cross title.
Other notable performances from the weekend:
Emma Bates — Bates made her marathon debut a memorable one, winning the USATF Championships at the CIM in 2:28:18. Her win earned her the overall USATF Running Circuit title for 2018.
Brogan Austin— Running strong over the final 5K of the CIM marathon, Austin won the men’s USATF Championships in 2:12:39, clipping 12 minutes off his previous PR.
Sarah Berger— Berger won the individual crown and led her Grand Valley State team to the title at the NCAA Division II cross country championships.
Katelyn Tuohy — Tuohy won the girls’ title at the Nike Cross Nationals, clocking 16:37.8 to set a course record and win by 17 seconds.
