The 2022 USATF Masters 1 Mile Championships will take place Saturday evening, May 21, 2022, hosted by the Genesee Valley Harriers and in collaboration with Full Moon Vista Bike & Sport. The national championship will be part of the Rochester Twilight Festival with the community and elite Rochester Mile and premier Rochester Twilight Criterium, a USA Cycling Championship. Athletes will compete in separate races. Masters Women kick off the USATF races at 5:45 p.m., with Masters Men at 6:05 p.m. The excitement continues to build as the Women’s and Men’s Open Elite Pro Races follow at 7:40 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., with equal $5,000 prize purses. All runners will navigate the same course used by the cyclists for the Criterium. It is a barricaded one-mile loop course through the heart of downtown Rochester. Championship Awards and cash prizes go to the top male and female finishers overall and in each 5-year age division. Awards and cash prizes also go to the top teams and to the athletes with the top age grade scores! Cash prizes will be awarded. The fleetest Masters Runners in the country will be chasing Masters Course Records, and American Records may also fall! Awards will be presented in the beautiful Beaux-Arts/Art Deco-hybrid Rundel Memorial Library situated on the course. Typical race time temperatures in the upper 60s to low 70s make ideal conditions for runners and spectators. The event is sponsored by the Rochester Sports Commission. Added attractions to fill out a weekend of racing, should you desire, are the Lilac 5K and 10K races on Sunday morning, May 22nd, at 8:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., respectively. Details at: https://runsignup.com/Race/Events/NY/Rochester/LilacRun. Rochester is a mid-sized city on Lake Ontario. The city rose to prominence as the birthplace and home of some of America’s most iconic companies, such as Eastman Kodak, Xerox, and Bausch and Lomb. Anchored by the University of Rochester and the Rochester Institute of Technology, the region became a global center for science. There is lots to do in Rochester, whether you enjoy art (Memorial Art Gallery); lilacs (the annual Lilac Festival will be the same weekend as the championship); photography (George Eastman Museum); toys & arcade games (Strong National Museum of Play); Women’s Suffrage (National Susan B. Anthony Museum & House); urban trails for running (Genesee Riverway Trail & Lilac Trail); craft breweries (Genesee Brew House & dozens of other microbreweries); or wine tasting (Rochester is a gateway to the Finger Lakes wine region).
