The 2022 edition of the Thorpe Cup, the annual Decathlon-Heptathlon competition between USA and Germany, is in the books. The German team traveled to Dallas, TX and returned home with victories in both the Decathlon and Heptathlon. This is the first time since women were added to the Thorpe Cup in 2006 that Germany won both competitions in the same year. The meet was held at St. Mark’s School of Texas July 9-10 (Saturday and Sunday). The American delegation arrived on Wednesday, July 6 and the German delegation arrived on Thursday, July 7. The host hotel was the Cooper Hotel on the Campus of Cooper Aerobics Center, less than two miles from St. Mark’s. The meet itself went very smoothly from start to finish. Allowing for the intense heat (107° on Saturday and 103° on Sunday), the athletes and guests were allowed to stay inside in between events to cool off. There were adequate drinks for hydration and snacks available throughout the two days of competition. There was a small banquet on Sunday night for everyone involved. The officials were first class and did a great job accommodating the athletes and coaches. Medals were given to each individual event winner and the overall team winners, along with team trophies. The meet was attended by many families, coaches, and friends of the competitors and coaching staff. They were allowed to follow the events from venue to venue and the atmosphere was joyous and supportive over the two days. In the Decathlon, the German Team scored 39,290 points to the US 37,436 points. *The men score the composite total of their top five athletes. In the Heptathlon, the German Team scored 17,596 points to the US 17,537 points. *The women score the composite total of the top three athletes.
