In order for a mark(s) from a meet or single event to be accepted for qualifying for the USATF Indoor Championships AND for USATF to be able to verify to the IAAF and various track & field ranking agencies the validity of the mark(s) for IAAF World Championships qualifying purposes, the following criteria apply:
*Meets that are last-chance in nature, or not on an organization’s calendar of events, must be reported to USATF at [duffy.mahoney@usatf.org] or (317-713-4673) not later than three full weeks from the first day/date of competition of those Championships. Doing so will permit the USATF staff member, as designated by the Sports Committee Chairs, to review the proposed meet/event. If the meet/event were to be approved, this would allow for sufficient time to disseminate meet information to as many interested competitors as possible. Failure to adhere to this protocol will likely result in the performance(s) being disallowed for qualifying purposes. Go to Top

Qualifying Guidelines for Senior Championships:
All qualifying performances must be made on an indoor track. There are no allowances for altitude, nor for indoor facilities of differing size, banking or other configuration.
Qualifying marks must be made in accordance with USATF Rule 149 and verifiable in one of the following:
USATF or IAAF sanctioned events which prescribe to or exceed USATF competition rules, or
Events at college meets which prescribe to or exceed USATF competition rules, or
High school meets, but not dual or triangular meets, which prescribe to or exceed USATF competition rules, or
Meets or events which meet a minimum for competitiveness as set by the Chair of the Sport Committee and determined to be valid by the USATF National Office staff member responsible for verification.
This is an annual USATF National Championship which requires qualification within a specific time period. Qualifying marks must be attained on or after Saturday, November 11, 2017 through Sunday, February 11, 2018, except for the Men’s Heptathlon and Women’s Pentathlon as stated below.
Qualifying marks for the men’s Heptathlon and women’s Pentathlon may be obtained on or after must be attained on or after January 5, 2017 through February 11, 2018.
Fully Automatic Timing (F.A.T.) is the only method of timing acceptable for qualifying marks for events listed with an asterisk (*). Times submitted in hundredths of a second must be fully automatic times.
A manual time may be used for qualifying in events without an asterisk only if no fully automatic qualifying time exists for the individual in that event during the qualifying period. A manual time may not supersede any fully automatic qualifying time for an event.
Women - Qualifying manual times, for eligible events, are the F.A.T. qualifying time without the last zero for events 200m and longer; the F.A.T. time minus 0.14 for events 400m - 1 Mile.
Men - Qualifying manual times, for eligible events, not already listed, are always the F.A.T. qualifying time without the last zero.
Manual times will be converted for seeding purposes using USATF Rule 166.
All performances are subject to verification by USATF National Office representative and/or USATF statistician/ marks verifier. For information on what constitutes an acceptable meet for qualifying purposes, refer to the Criteria for a Legal Meet or email duffy.mahoney@usatf.org at the USATF National Office.
All eligible entrants who have a verified mark that meets the posted standard are qualified, regardless of the listed field size. If there is an insufficient number of athletes entered who have met the qualifying standard for that event, the Sport Committee will go down the list of unqualified, entered, and declared athletes only as deep as is needed to fill the field to the listed size. Ties will not be broken.
In order for an athlete to be accepted for entry into the 2018 USATF Indoor Championships, he/she must be a U.S. citizen and eligible to represent the United States in all levels of international competition.
Athletes who have earned Automatic Qualification into the meet under USATF Rule 8 must follow all entry procedures and declarations procedures, and will be counted in that event’s field sizes by the seeding committee.
Note: The Sport Committee Chair may adjust the standards, where necessary, no later than forty-five days prior to the competition, based on received entries at that time. Therefore, early submission of an entry close to the standard is advised.
