Write for Us

USATF is always seeking fresh perspectives, rigorous analyses, and thoughtful storytelling from athletes, coaches, parents, researchers, and devoted fans across all track and field disciplines — sprints, hurdles, relays, distance, jumps, throws, race walking, and combined events.

If you have an idea that will elevate the discourse around our sport, challenge conventional wisdom, or connect the track and field community, we want to hear from you.

Our Editorial Standard

USATF Campus is the digital intersection of sports culture, technical methodology, and community. We are not a consumer gear hub or a casual fitness blog.

  • What you WON’T find here: Shoe reviews, consumer gear roundups, or casual lifestyle topics (e.g., 10 Bucket List Races)
  • What you WILL find here: Deep biomechanical breakdowns, elite training methodologies (e.g., the Physiology of Double Threshold), historical contextualization of world records, nuances of youth long-term athlete development (LTAD), and deep dives into event-specific tactics.

We aim to produce content that respects the intelligence, dedication, and curiosity of the entire track and field community.

What We’re Looking For

You may submit a rough draft, a structured pitch, or an outline accompanied by a summary of your core argument and why it matters to the USATF Campus community.

Before submitting, ensure your piece meets the following criteria:

  • Has a thesis: We publish arguments, technical breakdowns, and narrative explorations — not basic lists of tips.
  • Is backed by evidence: Support your claims with physiological data, biomechanical principles, historical records, or verifiable coaching methodology. Fact-check thoroughly and cite primary sources where appropriate.
  • Respects the disciplines: Whether writing about javelin release velocity, steeplechase water jump mechanics, or NCAA recruiting landscapes, write with deep respect for the technical realities of the event.
  • Voice and authority: Be clear, authoritative, accessible, and engaging. Avoid dry academic jargon where possible.
  • Original work: We only accept original content that has not been published elsewhere (including on personal blogs or Substack).

What We Publish

We publish three main tiers of editorial content:

Content Type Target Word Count Target Audience Focus Areas
Technical & Methodology 1,200 – 2,200 words Coaches, Elite Athletes Training systems, biomechanics, periodization, sports science, recovery protocols.
Culture & Analysis 1,000 – 1,500 words Fans, Athletes, Parents Historical retrospectives, race strategy breakdowns, global trends, rule evolution.
Community & Pathways 800 – 1,000 words Parents, Youth Coaches Junior-to-elite pipelines, mental health in elite sport, navigating recruiting, athlete welfare.

Why Write for USATF Campus?

Writing for USATF Campus puts your voice at the focal point of American track and field. Whether you are an established coach, a sports science practitioner, an elite athlete, or an ambitious student researcher, contributing to the Campus editorial hub offers tangible professional, community, and material benefits:

1. Give Back to the Sport

Track and field thrives when institutional knowledge is shared rather than hoarded. By breaking down complex training methodologies, analyzing biomechanics, or documenting historical shifts, you help elevate the baseline of knowledge for youth coaches, high school programs, emerging athletes, and passionate fans across the nation.

2. Competitive Paid Compensation

We respect the time, expertise, and research required to produce authoritative content. USATF Campus pays competitive, tiered freelance rates for all accepted and published feature articles, deep-dive technical analyses, and investigative pieces. However, please note that the honorarium will be waived for any contributor seeking CEU credit to maintain their USATF Coach Certification.

3. Dedicated Pathways for Undergraduate & Graduate Students

USATF Campus is committed to cultivating the next generation of sports scientists, biomechanists, journalists, and athletic administrators:

  • Academic & Portfolio Exposure: Publish your capstone findings, thesis breakdowns, or analytical essays in front of a national audience of collegiate coaches, sports performance directors, and national governing body leaders.
  • Mentorship & Editorial Guidance: Work 1-on-1 with experienced editors who help sharpen your thesis, structure complex data, and hone your technical writing skills for professional publication.
  • Exclusive USATF Contributor Perks: In lieu of an honorarium, student contributors receive their choice of one of the following exclusive perks: USATF.tv subscription, official USATF Merchandise, or a 1-year USATF membership.

How to Submit (and What Happens Next)

Complete the online content brief form.

  • Format: We prefer Google Docs links (with editing permissions enabled) so our team can provide inline feedback. Plain text or Markdown files are also accepted.
  • Response Time: Our editorial team reviews submissions weekly. Expect an initial response within 5 to 7 business days.

The Editorial Process

  1. Initial Review: An editor evaluates your submission for fit, novelty, and analytical depth.
  2. Developmental Feedback: If accepted in principle, an editor will work with you to sharpen your argument, tighten structure, and ensure scientific or historical accuracy. Writing for USATF Campus is a collaborative process — we rarely publish a first draft as-is.
  3. Copyedit & Formatting: We align your piece with USATF nomenclature and style guidelines.
  4. Publication & Reach: Your piece will be featured on USATF Campus; distributed to our national network of coaches, athletes, and clubs; and highlighted across official USATF channels.
