From August 4-11, one U.S. athlete in the top 100 of their respective event had the biggest absolute improvement to their world ranking, improving by 21 spots. Tate Taylor, the recently crowned three-time World Athletics U20 Champion, already had incredible success this season over 200m prior to last week. However, he added to his resume in a big way with a U20 world title in the 100m. Taylor entered the week ranked 57th in the world in the 100m amongst all senior athletes. At the World Athletics U20 Championships, he ran a season’s best of 9.94 (+0.1 m/s) to win the 100m after a 10.05 (0.0 m/s) in the heats and a 10.06 (+0.1 m/s) in the semi-finals to improve to 36th in the world. Both the 1st round and final are included in Taylor’s ranking score, along with the prelim and final at the Miramar Invitational and a second-place finish at the SEIKO Golden Grand Prix. As we can see, Taylor’s ranking score includes two preliminary races that provide no placing points. Should he run those times again in a final where there are placing points to be earned, he will continue to improve his world ranking. When assessing improvement based on percentage increase in ranking (e.g. 2nd to 1st is a 50% improvement as is moving from 30th to 15th), Tate Taylor’s climb from 57th to 36th is a 36% improvement, sweeping the week’s honors for a second time this season.
