DES MOINES — A pair of very close finishes thrilled a large crowd on the streets of the Iowa capital Tuesday evening as Yared Nuguse set a course record and he and Addy Wiley came away with their first USATF 1 Mile Road Championships titles.
Nuguse, the American record holder with a PB of 3:51.5 from a race in Germany two years ago, was lined up next to two-time defending champion Vincent Ciattei in the 18-man field, and from the start those two were virtually inseparable. They went through the first quarter in just under 59 seconds accompanied by Dylan Jacobs, and at the 880-yard mark they clocked 1:59 alongside Cooper Cawthra.
All the contenders passed three quarters in 3:00, and Ciattei started to make his move with just more than 220y to go. Nuguse, also the American record holder in the mile on the track outdoors, was ready to respond to Ciattei's gambit and fluidly covered the move. The Olympic bronze medalist in the 1500 in 2024 had plenty of gas left in his tank as he closed the quickest to take the victory in 3:54.1, with Ciattei earning silver in 3:54.7 and Drew Hunter bronze in 3:55.3.
World Indoor Championships 800 bronze medalist Wiley finished third in 2023 in her only previous try, but Tuesday evening she said good night to a pair of Gracies over the final 20 meters to capture gold in the event with a 4:25.5 that put her just .2 seconds ahead of silver medalist Gracie Hyde and another tenth up on Gracie Morris, who repeated her bronze medal effort from 2025.
The 17-woman field went out very quickly, covering the first quarter mile in 65 seconds with Wiley in the middle of a pack of eight who had a stride edge over the remainder of the runners. At the halfway mark in 2:13, six of that lead group had edged ahead and Wiley, Hyde and Morris were setting up a memorable finish.
Morris and Wiley were side-by-side at three quarters of a mile in 3:22, a second in front of Hyde, and the final quarter was shaping up as a battle between that trio. Still a foot ahead of Wiley into the final 100 yards, Morris had Hyde trying to find a path through, but as that played out it was Wiley who had the best finishing kick. Showing all of the speed that carried her to the USATF Indoor Championships 800 gold in early March, Wiley eased in front of her two rivals and broke the tape. Hyde had maneuvered several feet to her left and edged Morris at the line.
