INDIANAPOLIS -- Becoming the youngest ever medalist at the World Athletics Indoor Championships, Cooper Lutkenhaus (Justin, TX/USATF Southwestern) earned recognition as the 11th USATF Athlete of the Week award winner for 2026.
Lutkenhaus, 17, showed no signs of his youth when he controlled the final in the men's 800 at the World Indoor Championships in Torun, Poland, winning in 1:44.24 to become the youngest medalist in the history of the Championships. His time was the eighth fastest ever by an American indoors, and the second fastest by a U20 athlete behind only his world U20 indoor record of 1:44.03.
His win in Poland completed an undefeated indoor campaign for the Texas high school star, a season in which Lutkenhaus won the USATF Indoor Championships and three times ran under 1:45. He also set a world U20 indoor best of 1:14.15 in the 600 on Feb. 1 to win the Millrose Games at the NYC Armory.
Now in its 25th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week when there are high-level competitions and features the athlete on USATF.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
