Lananna Named Legend Coach Award Honoree

One of the most successful active collegiate coaches, with 11 NCAA team titles in cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field, Virginia's Vin Lananna is USATF's Legend Coach Award honoree for 2025.

Lananna, the head coach at Virginia since 2019, has headed some of the winningest programs in collegiate history since beginning his career in 1975 at his alma mater, C.W. Post. He helped lead Oregon to six NCAA titles between 2007-12 after guiding Stanford to five national crowns from 1996-2002.

As head coach at Dartmouth from 1980-92, Lananna had seven men's cross country teams qualify for the NCAA Championships, including a pair of national runner-up finishes in 1986 and 1987. Carrying that record of success to Stanford in 1992, his women's cross country team took NCAA top honors in 1996 and his men's squad picked up three championship trophies in 1996-97 and 2002. Stanford also won the men's outdoor track and field title in 2000.

Moving to Eugene to take over the reins of the Oregon program in 2005 after a short stint as Director of Athletics at Oberlin College, Lananna picked up where he left off, winning back-to-back NCAA men's cross country titles in 2007-08. The Ducks picked up a men's indoor national title in 2009 before a hat trick of women's indoor crowns from 2010-12.

On the international scene, Lananna was named men's head coach for Team USATF at the 2011 IAAF World Championships in Daegu, and he was selected as men's head coach for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. He previously served as an assistant on numerous U.S. team staffs and was the Men's Junior Team Leader for the 1990 World Cross Country Championships.

He was elected president of USA Track & Field in 2016 and played an integral role in attracting an array of national and global championships to Oregon, including the 2014 World U20 Championships, 2016 World Indoor Championships, 2022 World Championships, and three U.S. Olympic Trials – Track & Field from 2008 to 2016. Lananna also helped establish and oversee the Oregon Track Club Elite, a club that produced a slew of national and international medalists.

Lananna was inducted into the USTFCCCA Coaches Hall of Fame in 2012 and joined the LIU Post Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006.
