For Tuesdays with Toyota, we are spotlighting some of USATF's most dedicated members with a short feature on USATF.org and our social media channels. Here is our feature with USATF athlete Sue McDonald, a member of the USATF Southern California Association from Santa Barbara. Why are you a member of USATF? I am a member of USATF because I feel it provides me the opportunity to compete at the highest national level and I feel comfortable that meets are run professionally and in an organized manner. I have been a member of USATF for the last 40 years. What is your "why"? I want to see how fast I can run or how high or how long I can jump or throw as I age. I don't put limits on myself because of age - in fact, I am faster now than I was five years ago. While doing the best I can, I find that I motivate others and let them see that they can still get faster and not to get too hung up on age being a factor. What is something that helps you focus while you train? I do a lot of mental training for confidence and relaxation. I usually do a short bout of mental training such as visualization before a workout or race and then about 20-30 minutes each day while in season of breath work, meditation and visualization. I do this so that when it is time to train or compete, I don't have to think much with the exception of the task I have in front of me at the present moment. I try to break down my training or races in sections and then have process goals for them instead of focusing on outcome goals. How has USATF impacted you? Being a member and competing in USA Track & Field competitions throughout my life has enabled me to travel around the USA and internationally and meet new people and compete as a team (Team USATF) USATF Masters. I have had the opportunity to go after and break American age group records and WMA records because of all the athletes before me who set high standards. It has been fun to set goals, achieve them and then set new ones all over again and enjoy the process and people along the way. Outside USATF how do you spend your time? I like to ride bikes and walk my dog on trails near the beach. I also enjoy listening to podcasts and reading about health and wellness along with running as I am a running and strength coach and I love learning. What is your favorite USATF memory? In 2021, at the USATF Masters Indoor Championships, I was a part of a world record 4 x 400 and 4 x 800 relay team which broke world and American records. It took a lot of work to gather the team together at one location in the U.S. and have everyone stay healthy and injury free but we got it down and it was a lot of fun. Is there an athlete or person who inspired you to join the sport? I started in track and field in elementary school and completed all through high school and college and post collegiately. I became involved in track simply because I loved running and competing, and it didn't take long to meet new people and great coaches who inspired me to keep trying to achieve more and more. I would say that Jackie Joyner-Kersee was very inspirational to me along with Stacy Dragila -both women I competed against when I was in my prime.
