INDIANAPOLIS — Bettering a u20 men's hurdles American record that had stood for more than 40 years, Ja'Kobe Tharp (Rockvale, TN/USATF Tennessee) earned recognition as the 18th USATF Athlete of the Week award winner for 2024. Winning the Southeastern Conference 110H gold at Gainesville, Florida, the Auburn freshman clocked 13.18 to better the 110H (42-inch) American U20 record of 13.23 that was set by legendary Renaldo Nehemiah at Zurich, Switzerland, in 1978. The world U20 record of 13.12 was set by China's Xiang Liu in 2002. Tharp rocketed to 13.24 in the heats, chopping .22 off his PB, and then dominated the final, winning by .22 seconds. The Tennessee high school state champion for Rockvale in 2023, Tharp had a prep best of 13.32 over the 39-inch barriers. His 13.18 is the fastest in the NCAA ranks this season and among the top five fastest times in the world thus far. Other top performances from last week:
