LIMA – Team USATF swept the 4x400 relay medals Saturday evening at Estadio Atlético de la Videna to close out the World Athletics U20 Championships atop the medal and points tables. American athletes took four gold medals Saturday to bring the tally to eight, and captured 16 medals overall, both the highest of any nation. With 170 points, the U.S. also earned the team points title by more than 20 over Australia. A slow start to the Championships turned into a rush of medals over the final two days, highlighted by an American U20 record for Ja'Kobe Tharp in the men's 110 hurdles on Friday. Tharp clocked 13.05 to break the existing record by .03 seconds and lead a 1-2 U.S. finish as Andre Korbmacher earned silver in 13.14, moving him to equal third on the all-time U.S. U20 performer list. The women's 4x400 benefited from a swift and decisive anchor leg by 400 bronze medalist Zaya Akins. Akins had a hefty margin to make up on Australia, and she reeled in the Aussie anchor over the final 200 to cross the line in 3:30.74. Joining her on the top step of the podium were Michaela Mouton, Olivia Harris and Josie Donelson. Romping away from the world in the final event on the track, the men's 4x400 was never really in danger as Jayden Davis, Xavier Donaldson, Alexander Rhodes and Sidi Njie cruised to a 3:03.56 to win by more than a second. Earlier in the week Davis earned silver in the 400, with Njie taking bronze. Before the twin relay triumphs Saturday, Vance Nilsson clattered the final barrier in the men's 400 hurdles but recovered to win in 49.26, and Bryce Ruland was a surprise winner in the men's discus with a 62.59/205-4 that made him No. 6 on the all-time U.S. U20 performer list. Scottie Vines cleared a lifetime best 2.25/7-4.5 on his first attempt to take gold in the men's high jump, needing a clutch third attempt make at 2.23/7-3.75, while Akaoma Odeluga used a round four throw of 17.34/56-10.75 to win the women's shot put by more than three feet. The first American gold went to Molly Haywood on Thursday, taking the women's pole vault title with a 4.47/14-8 that earned her the No. 8 spot on the all-time U.S. U20 performer list. The first U.S. medal of the Championships was earned by Sophia Beckmon, who took silver in the women's long jump on day two with a 6.54/21-5.5 leap in the fifth round. Moving to No. 6 on the all-time U.S. U20 performer list, Karson Gordon grabbed silver in the men's triple jump with a huge PB of 16.74/54-11.25. Bronze medal performances were turned in by Sophia Gorriaran in the women's 800 with a 2:01.04 clocking, and Evie Bliss in the women's javelin, where she had a best of 54.01/177-2. Other top-10 all-time efforts went to Wyatt Haughton, who finished sixth in the men's 3000 steeplechase with an 8:38.84 to take over the No. 2 slot on the U20 performer list, and Ryan Johnson in the men's hammer qualifying round, where his 72.88/239-1 advanced him to the final and put him at No. 9 on the U20 performer list.
