INDIANAPOLIS — Cheyenne Nesbitt won her first USATF indoor pentathlon title and Steven Bastien defended his indoor heptathlon title Sunday at the Fall Creek Pavilion on the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Nesbitt won the high jump with a 1.83/6-0 clearance and outkicked 2020 USATF pentathlon champion Annie Kunz in the 800 to win by 57 points with 4,475. Kunz, sixth in the heptathlon at the Tokyo Olympic Games, opened the competition with an 8.18 win in the 60 hurdles, just off her PB of 8.18. Nesbitt took the lead after her high jump win and held onto it despite a Kunz win in the shot put with a best of 13.59/44-7. Neither woman had a strong long jump performance, but Nesbitt was the better by 30 points, adding to her lead and going into the final event with a 51-point cushion over Kunz. Kunz led Nesbitt through the first three laps in the 800, but Nesbitt rallied and went by her challenger in the final circuit to cross the line in 2:17.41, .43 ahead of Kunz. Hope Bender won the 800 to move onto the podium in bronze medal position with 4,392. An Olympic decathlete at Tokyo and the sixth-place finisher in the heptathlon at the 2022 World Indoor Championships, Bastien won four of the seven individual events and closed out with a 2:41.67 in the 1000 to tally 5,886 points. Jack Flood used wins in the high jump and 60H to take second with 5,665, while Jakob Torsden earned bronze with 5,494. Going straight to the lead with a 7.04 in the 60 on Saturday, Bastien sailed 7.34/24-1 in the long jump and then added a 13.95/45-9.25 runner-up effort in the shot put before clearing 1.95/6-4.75 in the high jump to top the leaderboard after day one with 3,247. After an 8.19 in the 60H, Bastien won the pole vault at 4.80/15-9 to establish an almost unassailable lead over Flood.
