Hakim McMorris won the individual title with a lifetime best score of 8,163 points to lead Team USATF's men to victory in the Thorpe Cup decathlon dual meet with Germany Sunday at Wetzlar, Germany. The U.S. tallied 39,065 points to Germany's 37,472 in a meet that used the combined scores of the top five finishers from each nation to determine the final team totals. McMorris won the first two events on day one, running 10.59 in the 100 and long jumping 7.78/25-6.25, before capping off the day with a speedy 46.50 in the 400. Teammate Denim Rogers was 320 points adrift of McMorris after the first five events but started to climb into contention with a 13.78 win in the 110 hurdles to open day two. After McMorris dropped points with a subpar discus and javelin, Rogers had an eight-point lead going into the final event, but McMorris turned in a sterling 4:28.42 in the 1500 to retake the lead and seal the win. Rogers ended up with a PB 8,074 in second, while Germany's top finisher was Marcel Meyer, third with 8,012. Other scorers for the U.S. were Sam Black (7,845 - 4th), Daniel Spejcher (7,701 - 5th), and Josh Farmer (7,282 - 9th). Germany eked out a 62-point win in the women's heptathlon competition, 17,901-17,839. Serina Riedel was the individual champion with a PB 6,078, just ahead of Allie Jones of the U.S., who was runner-up at 6,062. NCAA champion Timara Chapman of Texas A&M was fourth with 5,899, and Jenelle Rogers, who was fourth at the NCAA meet for Ball State, rounded out the American scorers with 5,878 in fifth.
