Greensboro, NC — Despite the warm conditions presented in Greensboro on day two of the USATF Masters Outdoor Championships, two age division world records in the women’s 400m toppled in addition to a handful of American records. Elizabeth Deak (Unattached) had a stellar performance in the women’s 65-69 400m to take down the previous world record of 1:11.45. She blazed to a 1:07.23 to win her race by nearly 10 seconds. Sue McDonald (Pursuit of Excellence Track Club) followed suit, breaking the 60-64 world record of 1:06.69 handily with her 1:02.34 400m. Kicking off an exciting morning of 100m dashes, Andrea Collier (Unattached) and Emmanuelle McGowan (Maximum Quotient Track Club) went neck-and-neck in a race for the ages in the 55-59 division. McGowan had the advantage through the first 70m, but Collier had a surge toward the finish to clock a winning American record time of 13.12 to McGowan’s 13.15. Both women ran faster than the existing record of 13.27. McGowan took that momentum into the 400m later in the day to better the American record in 1:02.40. Records continued to roll in in the 100s as the men got started. Robert Whilden Jr. (Houston Elite) became the first American to dip below 16 in the 85-89 division with his 15.93 clocking. His nearest competitor was Robert Williamson Jr. (Potomac Valley Track Club) in 17.64. Dot Sowerby (High Point Athletic Club) and Betty Stroh (Unattached) both ran under the existing American record of 2:44.25 in the 90-94 women’s 400m. Sowerby took the title and the record in 2:35.33, with Stroh close behind in 2:39.60. The men’s 70-74 4x80m shuttle hurdles American record stood no chance against the Non-Club “B” team. Ernie Snodgrass, Russel Jacquet-Acea, Larry Vollmer, and Jim Sharps clocked a swift 1:00.61 to better the existing 70-79 record by more than two seconds. Kay Glynn (Unattached) added to her impressive weekend with another American record in the 70-74 long jump. Her winning 3.96m leap came in the second round to better the previous record of 3.84m and best the competition by more than half a meter.
