INDIANAPOLIS — Bettering American indoor records in the men's 1,500m and mile at the Millrose Games, Yared Nuguse (Boulder, Colorado/USATF Colorado) earned recognition as the fifth USATF Athlete of the Week award winner for 2023. Nuguse, who two weeks ago bettered the American indoor record in the 3,000m with a 7:28.23 at Boston, ran a masterful race and used a sizzling kick to take down the mile AR that was set 18 years ago to the day by Bernard Lagat. Nuguse's 3:47.38 was also the second-fastest time ever run indoors, and he went through 1,500m in 3:33.22 en route to claim Lagat's AR at that distance. Covering the final quarter mile in 54.23, Nuguse also clocked the second-fastest American mile ever, indoors or outdoors. Other top performances from last week:
