LOUISVILLE — Hundreds of young athletes ages 7-18 from across the United States will converge this weekend on the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center for the USATF National Youth Indoor Championships. Competition in six age-group divisions will feature a full array of track events and field events, including club relays. The state-of-the-art facility, which opened in February of 2021, played host to last weekend’s USATF Masters Indoor Championships, which saw a slew of American and world age-group records as well as the 2023 ACC Championships in late-February. One of the top events will be the girls' 17-18 3,000m race walk, with the Elgin Sharks duo of Heather Durrant and Angelica Harris renewing their rivalry coming off a 202 season that saw both represent Team USATF at the World Athletics Team Race Walking Championships in Muscat, Oman. Durrant was second in the USATF 1 Mile Race Walk Championships at the Millrose Games last month, beating 2019 World Championships 50km walker Katie Burnett, among others. The boys' 17-18 pole vault has local favorite Wyatt Stewart, the New Balance Nationals runner-up who has cleared 5.26m/17-3 this year, a height that won him the Kentucky high school state title two weeks ago on the same runway he will be traversing this weekend. Arkansas state indoor champion Cade DeWitt has a best of 5.03m/16-6 and will challenge for the top spot on the podium. Another field eventer, Mississipian Roury McCloyen, won the boys 17-18 shot put at last summer's USATF National Junior Olympic Championships and enters with a best of 19.16m/62-10.5 that he set in winning that title. Georgia high schooler Tahir Hines was fourth at the New Balance Nationals in the 25-pound weight throw last week and has a best of 21.93m/71-11.5. The top six athletes in each individual and relay event earn medals and All-American honors. The winner of each event will also receive a trophy.
