INDIANAPOLIS — Longtime official and chair of the National Officials Committee Mike Armstrong has been named the 2023 recipient of the Giegengack Award. Armstrong, a 2021 inductee into the USATF National Officials Committee Hall of Fame, received the award Thursday at the USATF Annual Meeting in Orlando. The Robert Giegengack Award was established in 1982 in recognition of the late Yale track and field coach's half-century of "superior and outstanding contributions as an official, a coach, and an administrator in the sport and to the organization." It is awarded annually to a person "who excels in contributing to the excellence and high standards of the sport of Athletics." The Award is USA Track & Field's only accolade not limited to one of the sport's three disciplines (track & field, long distance running, and race walking), or to any one of the three principal areas of consideration (official, coach, or administrator). Armstrong is a USATF Master Official and is a World Athletics Referee. He has served on the NACAC Technical Officials Panel and is one of the most experienced NACAC area officials. A veteran of more than 20 USATF national championships events and U.S. Olympic Trials, Armstrong has also officiated at more than 70 NCAA national, regional and conference championship events. In 2022, Armstrong served as an official at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, the first World Outdoor Championships to be hosted on American soil, and he was a referee at this year's World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. A 2015 inductee into the Arkansas Track & Field Hall of Fame, Armstrong has received multiple awards from USATF, including the 2010 National Outstanding Field Event Official award, the 2010 Service Award, and the 2014 Leadership Award. He has taught at officiating clinics around the country and is also involved in training high school officials. Off the track, Armstrong serves as the director of Christ on Campus ministry at the University of Arkansas, a ministry he started in 1982.
