EUGENE, Oregon — Eight champions were crowned Friday on the first day of the USATF U20 Championships at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field. Nathaniel Rayan had a very slight lead over Kendrick Smallwood in the men's 110m hurdles final, but Smallwood clobbered a couple hurdles in the latter stages of the race and that allowed Rayan to sail through in lane one for the win in 13.40. Blaise Atkinson earned silver in 13.42, with Alex Chukwukelu taking bronze in 13.45. Running on her home track, Oregon's Aaliyah McCormick surged over the final three barriers in the women's 100m hurdles to grab gold in 13.02. Myla Greene was out quickest but couldn't match McCormick's closing burst and ended up second in 13.10, with Rylee Hampton garnering bronze in 13.35. Three women quickly separated themselves from the rest of the field in the latter stages of the women's 5,000m, and over the final lap Elizabeth Pickett of Texas had the best finishing speed to take gold in 16:58.86. Nimrit Ahuja made a valiant attempt in the last 200m and claimed silver in 16:59.12, with bronze going to Madison Clay in 17:02.00. Notre Dame's Ethan Coleman was a dominant winner in the men's 10,000m, crossing the line in 31:37.75 to win by almost a minute over Austin Hall, who was second in 32:31.92. Oregon's Aiden Smith was third in 32:43.76. A first-round 67.03m/219-11 by UCLA's Michael Pinckney held up for gold in the men's hammer throw, staving off a sixth-round challenge by Cal Poly's Rory Devaney, who hit 66.73m/218-11 for silver. Gary Moore of Baylor earned bronze at 66.56m/218-4. Triple jump golds went to Oklahoma's Agur Dwol, who hit her best of the day in the third round with a 12.87m/42-2.75, and Kyvon Tatham, who had only two legal efforts but won with his 15.54m/51-0 in the fifth round. Maddie Fey had three throws good enough to win the women's discus, topping out at 51.38m/168-7 on her final attempt.
