INDIANAPOLIS — Nikki Hiltz and Sam Prakel’s winning times at the 2023 USATF 1 Mile Road Championships are pending World Athletics ratification as the first-ever world records in the road mile. To commemorate the inaugural records Hiltz and Prakel set at the Championship in April, the City of Des Moines along with Drake Athletics has renamed 13th Street to ‘World Record Way’. As the road mile became a record-eligible event as of September 1, the top times recorded on record-eligible courses between January 1 and September 1 would be recognized as the world records. Having recorded the top times during that period, Hiltz and Prakel’s marks have been submitted for world record ratification. Hiltz clocked a 4:27.97 to win the women’s USATF title and set a course record, while Prakel clocked a 4:01.21 for the men’s win in Des Moines. Both times will be the marks to chase for athletes competing in the discipline at the inaugural World Athletics Road Running Championships - Riga 23 on October 1.
