INDIANAPOLIS — Recording the third-farthest women's discus throw ever by an American, Valarie Allman (Austin, Texas/USATF New York) earned recognition as the 13th USATF Athlete of the Week award winner for 2023. Allman, the Olympic champion at Tokyo and holder of the American record, unleashed a world-leading 70.25m/230-5 effort in the fifth round at the Triton Invitational in La Jolla, California, her third best throw ever and the No. 3 all-time U.S. performance. She set the AR of 71.46m/234-5 at the same meet last year. A bronze medalist at last summer's World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Allman now owns the top 10 marks ever by an American woman and has six career throws of 70m/229-8 or better.
