Two-time Olympic silver medalist and three-time Olympian George Woods died August 30 in Edwardsville, Illinois, at age 79. Woods, a 2007 inductee into the National Track & Field Hall of Fame, was one of the world's top shot putters from 1966-76, earning silver medals at the 1968 and 1972 Olympic Games and placing seventh in 1976. He won four AAU national indoor titles, including three in a row from 1967-69, and was the 1968 and 1972 Olympic Trials champion. In 1974, Woods had an indoor throw of 22.02m/72-2.75 at the Los Angeles Times Games that was farther than the outdoor world record, but since the IAAF didn't start ratifying indoor world records until 1987 his mark was never recognized. The NCAA runner-up in 1964 for Southern Illinois (Carbondale), Woods was fourth in the NCAA meet in 1966. After his track and field career ended, Woods worked at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville until his retirement in 2001. He and his wife, Jean, were married for 60 years, and he is also survived by his daughter, Lisa, and son, Andrew.
