For Tuesdays with Toyota, we are spotlighting some of USATF's most dedicated members with a short feature on USATF.org and our social media channels. Here is our feature with USATF athlete Kristin Bernaeyge, member of the USATF Illinois Association from Chicago, Illinois. Tell us about your journey with USATF and how it has impacted you: “The question I get asked most is, ‘Why do you run?’ and with an answer so simple as “because I can” — which has so much meaning behind it, came about with the support of a ‘village’ — the running community. In 2017, I was told to hang up my running shoes because the idea of me running again was slim-to-none after recovering from spinal surgery and a brain aneurysm. Until you are at your lowest, you realize up is the only way. I am a mom of two beautiful girls and when you realize their little eyes watch you each day, giving up isn’t an option. I was blessed with the support, encouragement, and motivation of the running community and in 2019 I ran my first marathon back despite the odds against me. Now, to be able to call myself a ‘runner’ and even a member of the USATF community is such an honor because it is something four years ago, I was told I more than likely wouldn’t have been able to do. So never give up on something that means so much to you — the possibilities are endless.” What are you most thankful for regarding your USATF community? “I’m most thankful for my mentors and the opportunity to have become a Level 1 coach with USATF. Being part of a running community where you are surrounded by like-minded individuals who understand the highest of highs and the unfortunate lows — who support you and motivate you and celebrate even the simplest of wins. That’s what makes a community and an environment.” Is there a word, phrase, or thought that helps you focus while you train? “It’s only temporary and the finish line is in sight.” Anything else you’d like the @USATF community to know about you? “Track and field is much more than a sport. It’s a mindset and a way of life. For me, running is my passion. It’s my safe place, it’s my reminder that there are no reasons to fear a starting line — because each time you get out there is an opportunity to grow.”
