For Tuesdays with Toyota, we are spotlighting some of USATF's most dedicated members with a short feature on USATF.org and our social media channels. Here is our feature with USATF athlete Chris McDonald, member of the USATF Colorado Association from Niwot, Colorado. Tell us about your journey with USATF and how it has impacted you: “I returned to USATF when I turned 50, committed to giving masters racing a shot. My previous USATF championships were run in high school! After a nearly 30-year break from competitive racing, let's say I am well rested. USATF has helped me regain fitness, motivation, and enthusiasm for the sport. Last year, I won the USATF Colorado 1 Mile Road Championship. This year, we formed a Men's 50 team and competed at our first Club Cross Country Championship. USATF has provided us with amazing age group team racing opportunities to rejuvenate our Club. We have been thrilled to meet other Clubs around the country. We aren't competing with each other as much as we are coming together to creating a meaningful experience together with a sport we love. Personally, I have dropped 20 pounds in the last two years. In 2020, I improved my mile time by 19 seconds running 5:13. In 2021, I dropped another 15 seconds. This year I dropped 12 more seconds to run 4:46, posting the fastest time in the USA for my age group. It was bested by one second a month later, thereby motivating me for another year.” What are you most thankful for in regard to your USATF community? “USATF is essential to creating these opportunities for all of us. I'm extremely grateful for the focus and investment into age-group specific racing opportunities. The renewed Long Distance Running (LDR) focus in the past year is excellent. Support from clubs across the country will grow as a result.” Is there a word, phrase, or thought that helps you focus while you train? “The opportunity to compete in National Championship caliber competitions with my teammates motivates me every day.” Anything else you'd like the @USATF community to know about you? “I am deeply involved in Boulder Road Runners, a club founded in 1979. We have supported age group specific racing since it was first introduced. Club founder Rich Castro fully supported the idea through the 80s and 90s. The forming of the Club Cross Country National Championship, and splitting it out into its own event, is something our club fully supports. Club Cross Country is THE National Championship of club racing. We organize activities around it every year now. Our goal is to field eight teams next year (M40 through M70 for men and women). You can see how these opportunities USATF is creating for clubs is instrumental for helping us to also grow our club membership. It is a great partnership.”
