Thomas’ sprint feats earn her USATF Athlete of the Week honors

INDIANAPOLIS — Running the fastest time by an American in 2022 in the women’s 200m, Gabby Thomas (Austin, Texas) earned recognition as the 15th USATF Athlete of the Week award winner for 2022.

What made Thomas’ 200m win at the USATF Golden Games at Mt. SAC so special wasn’t necessarily the time, though a 22.02 is nothing to sneeze at, but rather that it came only 30 minutes after she placed third in the 100m with a wind-aided 10.86. And that was only an hour or so after she had clocked a wind-legal 11.00 in the heats, equaling her lifetime best.

Thomas, the Olympic bronze medalist at 200m last summer at Tokyo, is second on the 2022 world list in the 200m and tied for eighth in the 100m. At the Texas Relays in March, she won the sprint double with windy times of 10.92 (w +2.9) and 21.69 (w +3.1), and her 200 is the fastest all-conditions time in the world this year.

Other top performances from last week:

  • Kara Winger threw a U.S.-leading 63.29m/207-7 to win the women's javelin at the Mt. SAC Relays. Only four other American women besides Winger have ever thrown farther.
  • Fred Kerley ran a world-leading 19.80 to win the men's 200m at the USATF Golden Games.
  • Courtney Wayment of BYU ran a world-leading 9:26.88 to win the women's 3,000m steeplechase at the Mt. SAC Relays. Her time moved her to No. 3 on the all-time collegiate performer list.
  • Michael Cherry ran a world-leading 44.28 to win the men's 400m at the USATF Golden Games.
  •  Trey Cunningham of Florida State ran a world-leading 13.22 in the men's 110m hurdles at the Tom Jones Memorial meet at Florida, moving to No. 10 on the all-time collegiate performer list.

Now in its 21st year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week when there are high-level competitions and features the athlete on USATF.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
