Personal Bests Abound on Final Day of USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships
SACRAMENTO, California -
The final day of the 2022 USATF National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships was a fitting sendoff for the meet, littered with national titles, personal bests, and incredible performances from hundreds of USATF future stars.
In only the third race of the day,
Alexis Leone
(Unattached/USATF Pacific Northwest) added a 15-16 1500m title to go along with her 3000m title from yesterday morning. Leone went straight to the front and strung out the field, reaching the bell lap with only
Chloe Elbaz
(Pacific Coast Shockwaves/USATF Southern California) still in tow. With 300m to go, Elbaz made a spirited challenge for the lead but could not take the rail from Leone, entering the home stretch neck-and-neck. Leone would make a decisive move in the final stages of the race, seperating to win in 4:36.45. Elbaz finished a well-earned second in 4:42.30 with
Charley Hamilton
(Texas Titans Track/USATF Southwestern) third in 4:48.33.
Brandon LaFell Jr.
(Dave Bethany T.C./USATF Gulf) made a three-second improvement on his prelim time to surprise the field and win the boys 11-12 400m title in 54.52. With just 30 meters to go, LaFell was in third place behind
Chase Wooley
(Texas Storm Track Club/USATF Gulf) and
Adrian Campbell Jr.
(San Diego Elite Youth Track/USATF San Diego - Imperial) but would not be denied his first national title, surging into the lead in the final steps. Wooley would finish second in 54.74 with Campbell close behind in 54.77.
Jacob Andrews
(Ready-Set-Go Sprinters/USATF Pacific Northwest) wrapped up the 400m races with an electric 46.71, bettering his stellar personal record to win the national title. Coming off the curve in a virtual tie with
Grant Buckmiller
(Gls Speed TC/USATF Pacific Northwest), Andrews found another gear and ran a masterful final curve, putting nearly a second on Buckmiller and the rest of the field by the finish line. Buckmiller finished second in 47.65 with
Charis Jackson
(North Texas Jackrabbits/USATF Southwestern) third in 47.86.
Andre Korbmacher
(Ready Set Go Sprinters/USATF Pacific Northwest) ran a tremendous time of 13.68 into a headwind to take the title in the men’s 17-18 110m hurdles. Korbmacher got out of the blocks hot and didn’t look back, separating from the field by the third hurdle to coast to a new personal best.
Landon Helms
(Unattached/USATF Snake River) was second in 13.98 and
Alexander Chukwukelu
(Major Impact TX/USATF Southwestern) was third in 14.00
The girls 8 & under 100m had to go down to the thousandth to decide a champion, with
Madison Marshall
(Major Impact Track/USATF Southwestern) and
Mila Woolforde
(Black Lightning/USATF New York) both running 14.59. After a long wait for the video board to determine the final times, Marshall just edged Woolforde - 14.585 to 14.590 for the national title in one of the closest races of the day.
Yan Vazquez
(Arizona Flames Track Club/USATF Arizona) had one of the most dominant runs of the week in the men’s 17-18 400m hurdles, running 51.31 to win by over 2 seconds and give Kerron Clement's meet record 49.77 a scare. Vazquez appeared to be flush with the rest of the field at halfway, but quickly pulled away to seal the victory in front of a crowd that had come to their feet to cheer for the champion.
