TUCSON — Janee’ Kassanavoid moved to No. 3 on the U.S. all-time performer list in the women’s hammer and Sam Mattis had the best discus throw by an American man since 2018 Saturday at the USATF Throws Festival on the campus of the University of Arizona. Kassanavoid (Manhattan, Kansas/USATF Missouri Valley) hit a lifetime best of 78.00m/255-11 in the third round to climb up to third on the all-time U.S. list behind only reigning world champion DeAnna Price and Brooke Andersen (Phoenix, Arizona/USATF Inland Northwest). Andersen, who leads the 2022 world list, ended up second with a best of 77.75m/255-1. Taking advantage of a friendly right quartering wind, Mattis (East Brunswick, New Jersey/USATF New York) sailed the men’s discus out to 68.69m/225-4, a lifetime best by more than three feet and the best throw by an American man since Reggie Jagers hit 68.61m/225-1 to win the USATF Championships in 2018. Mattis had a superb series, with the shortest of his six attempts measuring 65.06m/213-5. Andrew Evans (Portage, Michigan) also had a big personal best to take the runner-up spot, and his 66.74m/218-11 in the fourth round met the World Championships qualifying standard. Four-time Olympian and former American record holder Kara Winger (Colorado Springs, Colorado/USATF Colorado) upped her U.S.-leading mark in the women’s javelin to 63.75m/209-2 on her final attempt to win by more than 15 feet, and Veronica Fraley (Clemson, South Carolina/USATF North Carolina) added more than 12 feet to her lifetime best in the women’s discus with a winning throw of 62.30m/204-5. Recording his third best effort ever in the men’s javelin and his best distance since 2015, Tim Glover (Normal, Illinois/USATF Illinois) was a convincing winner with a fifth-round 82.81m/271-8. Glover, the 2011-12 NCAA champion, had two other throws past the 80m line and turned back Olympian Curtis Thompson (Florence, New Jersey/USATF New Jersey), who settled for second at 81.22m/266-6. American record holder Rudy Winkler (Ithaca, New York/USATF New York) won the men’s hammer with a best of 78.51m/257-7, edging Mexico’s Diego Del Real. Two other Team USATF athletes met the World Championships standard, with Daniel Haugh (Marietta, Georgia/USATF Georgia) taking third at 77.94m/255-8 and Sean Donnelly (Chula Vista, California/USATF Inland Northwest) fourth at 77.50m/254-3, both season bests. A spirited women’s shot put competition saw Jamaica’s Danniel Thomas-Dodd, the 2019 World Championships silver medalist, come away with the win at 19.53m/64-3. Jessica Ramsey (Memphis, Tennessee/USATF Tennessee), the winner of the U.S. Olympic Trials last June, was third at 19.38m/63-7, a season best. New Zealand’s Tom Walsh took the men’s shot put with a toss of 21.60m/70-10.5, with Jordan Geist (Cabot, Arizona/USATF Three Rivers) notching a season best of 21.14m/69-4.25. Pole vault wins went to Olympic silver medalist Chris Nilsen (Vermillion, South Dakota/USATF Dakotas), who won the men’s event with a 5.80m/19-0.25 clearance, and Olivia Gruver (Seattle, Washington/USATF Potomac Valley), who navigated 4.55m/14-11 for the women’s title. Marquis Dendy (Ocala, Florida/USATF Florida) had a wind-aided 8.10m/26-7 to take the men’s long jump, while Nigeria’s Ese Brume won the women’s long jump at 6.72m/22-0.75.
