Hawkins’ heptathlon win earns her USATF Athlete of the Week honors

INDIANAPOLIS — Winning a World Athletics Combined Events Tour - Gold event, Chari Hawkins (San Diego, California/USATF San Diego-Imperial) earned recognition as the 22nd USATF Athlete of the Week award winner for 2022.

Hawkins, who finished fourth at the USATF Combined Events Championships last month in Arkansas, added seven points to her lifetime best with a 6,243 score that won the event at Arona, Spain, on the island of Tenerife, by 69 points. She cleared a lifetime best of 1.85m/6-0.75 in the high jump on day one and then had season bests in all three events on day two as she recorded the ninth-highest score in the world this year.

Other top performances from last week:

  • Keira D'Amato won the women's USATF 6km Championships in a course-record 17:52.
  • Tamari Davis ran the second-fastest women's U20 100m ever by an American and the fourth-fastest ever, winning the Music City meet in Nashville in 10.91.
  • Daniel Haugh won the men’s hammer at the Music City Track Carnival with a lifetime best 79.44m/260-7, the farthest throw by an American this year, and improved his status as the No. 6 all-time U.S. performer in the event.

Now in its 21st year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport.
